To get the horse going you kick it in the gut (trotting and walking) and to canter, you sit down, and wrap your legs around the horse(one leg goes slighty forward, the other goes slightly back) and squeeze!

A horse would not be very comfortable on a porch. Even a miniature horse would prefer a grassy patch to a man made set up. Though it is possible to have a horse stay on a porch it is not the best idea and is not terribly comfortable for the animal.
