If your rabbit has hardened feces stuck to its bottom, there are two things you should think about:

  • Cleaning the rabbit
  • Determining and treating the cause

Healthy rabbits clean themselves, and their feces comes out in hard balls that doesn't stick to their fur. If your rabbit has mushy feces or diarrhea, something is wrong and your rabbit needs to see a vet as soon as possible. Simply removing the dried feces won't help because the problem will just come back. A rabbit with diarrhoea is at severe risk of developing much worse illness (GI stasis).

If the diarrhea was an isolated incident, then it was probably caused by something the rabbit ate, like a poisonous plant, or maybe just a plant that doesn't agree with your rabbit (food sensitivity/allergy). To prevent this from happening again, do not feed that food to your rabbit. Pay attention whenever you feed your rabbit something new, and only feed one new food at a time, so that you'll know exactly what caused the diarrhea (or any bad reaction).

To remove the hardened feces, you'll have to soften it first. Try holding a warm wet cloth against the soiled fur until it softens.

Avoid giving the rabbit a bath if at all possible. Baths can be dangerous for rabbits! If you must give the rabbit a bath, take care to ensure the rabbit stays safe. See the related questions below for details and links.
