You cannot hunt deer, they will smell you and start shooting back!

Seriously, if you approach your hunting area from the opposite direction the wind is blowing it helps. Say you see a deer 100 yards north of you, and the wind is blowing out of the north, you will want to approach the deer from the south. This will carry your scent away from the deer. Watch the wind direction closely. If it changes direction you may want to move to another stand. There are some companies that make wind checkers which are basically little bottles of talcum powder. You just squeeze the bottle and watch which way the powder moves. You can also tie a piece of sewing thread to your bow or rifle and keep an eye on it.

As always keep your noise and movement to a minimum, and be extra alert since the wind makes it more difficult to hear. You will need to rely on your eyes more.

Finally, don't be afraid! There has never been a case of murder by a by a deer packin' a gun!
