There is a difference between a registered dog, a purebred dog, and a well-bred dog. You can tell a registered dog by his registration papers. That's the only way. You can assume a dog is purebred if he looks purebred. Purebred dogs don't necessarily have papers. In fact, if they've been through a shelter, their papers have been cancelled if they had any to start with. The kennel club has a program that allows owners of dogs which appear to be purebred to get an "Indefinite Listing Privilege" (ILP) so that they can compete with their dog even if it isn't registered. The catch is that the dog must be spayed or neutered and is not permitted to compete in conformation but only in performance sports like obedience, agility, tracking, and herding. What's the difference between a purebred dog without papers and one that looks purebred? There is no significant difference. They look the same, and you can do the same things with them. Now the well-bred puppy. This is a puppy produced by a skilled breeder who knows her genetics and uses science to plan her litters. This is not the neighbor who has a nice dog and decides to breed it. One clue to a well-bred puppy is his pedigree. If every ancestor for five generations back have OFA numbers and titles, odds are he's a well-bred puppy. Without those titles and health clearances in his ancestors, he's just a purebred.

Yes.
He/She is probably a German shepherd mix. If you had ever noticed that German Shepherds vary in color and size from one to the other, and had gathered though research that these animals were bred with many types of shepherd dog, with a main cross being the wolf, you might agree that it stands to reason that if fact this dog may actually be a German Shepherd with a different heritage. From what you have said in the question I would say it's a German shepherd Akita mix. :)
The correct name is a cross breed, but you could call it a Labmanollie, as it covers all three breeds.
