#1 importance is to determine what your mare needs in regards to improvement of her conformation, movement and breed. If your mare is registered then stick with a stallion in that breed. The only breed that has a VERY active part-bred registry and show events in the USA is the Arabian. If your mare is un-registered, look at an Arabian stallion as a possible cross as the foal would be eligible for registration and showing, which increases its sale value. Always pick a stallion that does NOT share similar faults with the mare.
Of course location, accessibility and cost are important in selecting a stallion. Look at the studs siring records. Are his foals well received or in demand? Does he have particular qualities he is know to pass on to his get? Always picking the most popular stallion is not a good idea as the market can become saturated with his offspring, but picking an obscure stallion can be a problem when trying to sell at a future date.
