How do you pick a horses hoof if they bite or paw the ground when you're trying to lift the hoof?

Scrape from the frog (bulb of foot--similar to the heel of your palm) to the toe (end of the foot). To understand better, either do a YouTube search (bet'cha they will have a video of how to properly pick a hoof) or learn the hoof anatomy and refer to my answer.

There are many different ways people use to get the horse to lift a horses foot up. I'll tell you how I trained my horse to pick up her feet. Keep in mind that they may try to rip their hoof out of your han at first, so you need to be pretty strong, or get someone who is to help you. I advise pinching the fetlock or chestnut at least while you are first training. I pinch the tendon on her front feet. I do it a little different for the back. You just have to keep pinching until he/she makes any movement towards lifting his/her leg. This could be anything from just shifting his/her weight a litle bit off the foot, or picking it up (which isn't likely the first time). The key is to reward the try. When he/she gives a little try, immediatly stop pinching. This teaches the horse that she did the right thing. Horses learn from the release, not the pressure. Once you get the foot off the ground, if the horse struggles, try your hardest to keep holding the foot. Do not put the foot down until he/she stops strugling. If you let go, he/she learns from the release of the pressure of you holding its foot that snatching it away was the right thing to do. That's why you need to be pretty strong. And for the back feet, you can do the same thing, but I have trained Lady to lift it when I grab her hock. I just don't have to bend down as far. However, I trained her to lift her back legs the same way I explained above. When I had her lifting all her legs well, I trained her to lift on a diffrent cue. You may chosose to do this too. You may choose to tap his/her leg, grab the hock, by voice comand, whatever you can think of. Just apply that cue, then pinch the fetlock. Eventually, the horse gets that when you use that cue, you are about to lift his foot, and so he lifts is after that first cue, before you pinch the fetlock. Depending on how long and often you can work with them, it may take hours, it may take days, and for some horses, it may even take weeks. Remember, make haste slowly. Don't be in a hurry, and don't skip steps. It never works out that way.
