How do you potty train a poodle?

There are many different methods that vary from breed to breed but I think this one works the best, especially for small dogs that you can easily carry:

1. Get a "pee mat" for your pup that is quite big and soaks up things and put it in a quiet corner in your house.
2. Your puppy will pee in the house at first, you must admit this but you can encourage it to step outside and do its business in the garden.
3. When your pup takes a leak don't say anything to it, pick it up wihtout stroking or fussing over it and place it on the mat. Make sure you DO NOT shout at it or else it will think it's bad to pee and will get a negative view of you.
4. Whenever the pup wals off the mat take it back there but don't wait for it to come off. Each time don't say anything apart from telling it to sit.
5. Eventually, when the dog sits, leave it there for 5 minutes and then return. You can now fuss over your dog an tell it how good it is. Play with it and stroke it and move the mat out of the way.
6. Over time your dog will start to associate peeing with the mt and should go there when it wants to pee. Everytime you see this praise the dog.
7. Eventually when you see the dog walking over to the pee mat, bring it outside and reassure it to go there. If it goes on the grass praise it but never tell your dog off.
8. When your pup has got the idea that toilet = outside you can get rid of the pee mat and continue to praise the dog for going in the garden until it becomes normal to it.

The best way for me was to have a set schedule. Every day, I take him out at the same time every morning, my husband takes him out at the same time at lunch and I take him out again in the evening...again, at the same time. He had trouble at about 6 months old when we was not neutered. Now he's 1 year and 3 months, neutered, and rarely goes in the house at all. Best of luck with your Bichon! Potty training can be easy but is time consuming. Male dogs take longer to potty train as a rule. Our small standard poodle is eight months old and is now finally fully potty trained. Female dogs potty train faster. Our little nine week old puppy female goes out on the grass and is doing great, of course she does not have free reigns of the house yet. It's best to buy a crate big enough for your dog to stand up and turn around in. Put him in it at night when you go to bed (he may cry for ten minutes or so) don't take him out though. Make sure you don't feed him past five o'clock in the evening. Take him out every hour and just before you go to bed at night. He will be able to hold himself eight hours. When you wake up take your puppy outside first thing. You may have to take him out again right after he eats breakfast. Ours sometimes needs to go again in 30 minutes. Use a leash in the house or a playpen to keep him in when you are busy and can't watch him. He does not need to roam around the house until fully potty trained. When you go somewhere and you can't take him, put him in his crate. Be consistent and it won't take long at all.
