Sometimes you just can't, some dogs never have this problem and some do, usually anal glands need expressed once a year or every 2 years, when they start scooting their rears, or you smell that smell its time for the vet, you can learn to do it yourself but its a stinky job, I've tried it, I'd rather go to the vet and have it done right.
