A horse shoe needs to be properly fitted by a qualified farrier with a forge and the correct tools. If you do not have this training you should not do it yourself as you could seriously hurt the horse. However a horseshoe is typically shaped by the farrier with a forge and hammer then 'hot fitted' to the hoof to show where it sets on the hoof. Then if the shoe is a good match to the hoof the farrier will line it up again and begin placing the nails in the slots on the bottom of the shoe and drive them into the hoof wall. Once that is finished he will snip off the ends and file them down smooth.
