To make a horse trot, you must lightly kick the horse, and it should get going. If not, give it a tap on the rump with a crop (whip) and kick a bit harder.

The aids for trot are:

Half halt (squeeze gently down the outside rein)

Talking to the horse

Once in trot if you know what your diaganals are, you check them, steady up your trot and there you have it!

You might also want spurs if it's always a fight to get them go faster. If you ride western, you sit to the beat. If english, when the outside leg is going forward you post every time.

After your horse is trotting you rise up and down in rhythm with the trot. If you want to learn diagonals you rise when your horse's front outside leg goes forward. You softly sit back down when your horse's front inside leg goes forward. It's kind of complicated when you actually do it though.

First you should find out why your horse doesn't want to trot. Does his back hurt? Does his feet hurt? Does his saddle fit right? Is he scared? Are you pulling back while telling him to trot? Is he tired? Then if all these turn out to be no then hes probably just lazy and there are always spurs, crops, and stronger leg muscles.

The trot, a two beat gait can be a bit bumpy to ride. Most people whether they ride english or western will post to the trot, which means they slightly raise their bottoms out of the saddle when one pair of legs is lifted and sit back down gently as the same pair of legs hits the ground. To get the horse into the trot you should have already warmed up the horse and have him going at a good walk. Next take up the reins a bit and squeeze with your calves just a tiny bit, the horse should move forward from the pressure into a trot.
