Monkeys do not have much in the way of defense. Normally they run away, or scream from the treetops, or throws sticks at the predator to scare it away. This is not usually effective. They can defend themselves from other monkeys, or small reptiles. But their predators are large birds, snakes, and jaguars, who are among the highest in the food chain of the rain forest.

While not unique to spider monkeys, the long prehensile tail is unusually developed in the spider monkey, and it can use its tail to stand and walk upright on two legs.
