Was the bison smart?

I hope you are asking ''ARE bison smart?'' as they still exist. My answer would have to be, yes. Many people like to place them in the same mentality as domestic cattle; however, bison, not being domestic, have much better survival instincts. One example that comes to mind is that a bison will dig through drifts of snow to get to the grass buried beneath it to eat, where many breeds of domestic cattle do not instinctively know to do that, and can starve to death in a snow covered field unless fed hay. Of course, this is only my opinion, I have never tested either animal for intelligence, mostly because I have been unsuccessful in getting the bison to hold a pencil.
