They are intelligent and love learning tricks. On housebreaking, Westies can go either way --- some are relatively easy while others are difficult. Remember, tiny dogs have tiny bladders -- so any small-breed puppy WILL take longer to housebreak than a larger breed.

Terriers, including Westies, can sometimes be stubborn -- it's not that they aren't intelligent, just that during training you have to keep things interesting for them because they get bored easily and when they do --- that's when they become stubborn.

For a first-time trainer or first-time dog owner I would not recommend a terrier of any type. I love terriers and have trained many, but terriers are NOT for everyone. First-timers can have a particularly hard time with that dynamic terrier temperament.
