How hard are westies to potty train?

They are intelligent and love learning tricks. On housebreaking, Westies can go either way --- some are relatively easy while others are difficult. Remember, tiny dogs have tiny bladders -- so any small-breed puppy WILL take longer to housebreak than a larger breed.

Terriers, including Westies, can sometimes be stubborn -- it's not that they aren't intelligent, just that during training you have to keep things interesting for them because they get bored easily and when they do --- that's when they become stubborn.

For a first-time trainer or first-time dog owner I would not recommend a terrier of any type. I love terriers and have trained many, but terriers are NOT for everyone. First-timers can have a particularly hard time with that dynamic terrier temperament.

If this is a puppy, it will take him or her up to 6 months old to learn to hold his or her urine or bowel movement. Meanwhile, put the puppy out every hour or every half hour right after they eat or drink. Soon the puppy will see the home as a den and won't mess in it. Any hard to train animal can be bribed with treats so don't worry about it.
