How long can a dog live without food after surgery?

Dogs can become constipated after having surgery due to the anesthetic or the pain meds, many reasons. Should not go longer than 3 days if eating ok. Call your Veterinarian that did the surgery or take your pet to see him or her again to be checked up. Only your Vet can tell you the correct laxative to use and most important of all is being constipated the correct diagnosis? It could be something else. That is why it is so important to take your dog back in to the Vet who did the surgery.

You cannot go on not giving a dog food. A dog will die without food anyway, and after surgery, will die even quicker, possibly a matter of days. Animals starve after a week without food on a regular basis. If your dog has received surgery and you cannot feed it, it will die. If you cannot care for a dog, give it to a humane animal shelter that does not believe in euthanasia (being put-down), such as the ASPCA. If you cannot care for your animal you should not be in control of it, risking its life.
