Koalas need moisture regularly, but they can survive without drinking water for weeks at a time. They rarely drink water, but they obtain their moisture needs from the eucalyptus leaves they eat. They also receive "incidental" water when rain falls in bushland and gathers on the leaves of eucalyptus trees.

In extreme heat or prolonged dry periods, koalas will actively seek water to drink.
