Camels have inhabited arrid regions since before man did. Many millions of years as a minimum. This species has as its earliest fossil evidence the North American (yes!) camel, and it evolved sometime in the Paleogene, which is the first part of the Cenozoic era, which followed the demise of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago.
