How long should a dog hold its urine?

I think it would depend on the size of the dog and how often he/ she drinks water. When I was a kid, we use to have a lab who would hold his bladder for 8 hours. I think that this is even too hard for humans I wouldn't expect my dog to do anything I couldn't do myself. I put down wee wee pads during the day and he always goes on them. When I get home I pick them up and he goes to the door when he needs to go. Some dogs will withhold from drinking water if they know they won't be able to go out to potty. One of my dogs won't drink water if it's raining because she doesn't like to go out in the rain! Your dog is just doing what dogs do.

Most puppies do not have full bladder or bowel control until they're around six months old. A good rule of thumb is to expect a puppy to hold it for about as many hours as his age in months. In other words, a two-month-old pup can hold it for two hours in a crate, a three-month-old pup for three hours in crate, and so on, up to about six to eight hours for an adult dog. Note: This rule does not apply when a puppy isn't crated. Most pups will need frequent potty breaks while they are up and running loose in the house or a pen.
