It's estimated there are 3,000- 5,000 active teams in the US for Guide Dogs. Roughly 100-150 new dogs graduate each year from all the schools. There are nearly 20,000 total service dogs in use currently.
There are more dogs than there are homes for them. While many pounds try to save all dogs that are suitable for adoption, some dogs are too ill or too dangerous to be adopted. Many pounds do not have the money or the space to keep all the dogs that could be adopted, so many nice, healthy dogs have to be put to sleep. This is why animal welfare organizations tell people that they should spay and neuter their pets, so that someday all puppies will have good homes and there will not be so many unwanted dogs. The injection they use is quick and painless, so that is why they use that method.
Brian Turner did use the point of views in his poem 2000 pounds to make the poem more appealing.
