A groundhog den typically houses one adult groundhog, especially during the breeding season. However, a female may have her young in the den, which can range from 2 to 6 kits. After weaning, the young will usually leave the den by late summer or fall. Adult groundhogs are generally solitary animals outside of the breeding season.
