How many months does a dog have to be to get her period?

Dogs don't have a period like a person, because unlike a person it's during this time that they can become pregnant. It's called a Heat Cycle, and it happens twice a year, and lasts approximately 21 days.

Ideally, a female dog should be spayed before the onset of her first Heat Cycle (which can start between 6-8 months of age). Done early, being spayed gives the dog some serious health advantages, though a female dog can be spayed at almost any age.

There are many free or reduced cost spay clinics all over the country. Ask your vet's office or your local animal shelter what spay programs are in your area.

The first heat usually comes within the first 8 months. Don't let her get pregnant though until the 2nd or 3rd heat.
