How many people were killed last year by pitbulls?

This is just in the USA. In January 2006 to December 2008- In this three year period Pitbulls killed 51 people. That's about 17 people per year.

In 2009 Pitbulls killed 14 people

2010 Pitbulls killed 22 people

2011 Pitbulls killed 22 people.

And at the time of writing this 4th October 2012 Pitbulls have also killed 22 people.

So to answer your question, from 2006 onwards in the USA Pitbulls kill about 20 people per year.

The sad part is we will never know. There are over 30 different breeds of dogs that are commonly mistaken for Pits. So, when a dog is attacking, people automaticaly assume that the dog is a pit. I would have to say the most common dogs that get mistaken for Pit are American Bulldogs and American Stadforshire Terriers (most will tell you that the Staffy's are the same as a Pit but they are not). Another sad part is often time people rely on the identification of Pitbull experts to identify the dogs, and often times even the Pit experts can't indentify the dogs. Many "Bully" breed mixes can look like pits and so everyone goes with, "if it looks like a pit is must be a pit". I have an American Bulldog/Terrier mix. When I got her from the pound I was told she was a Pit. Since I had grown up with an American Bulldog I had doubts about the fact she was a pit. I was able to do a DNA test on her to find out what she was and I was shocked that she had no Pit in her.

Another thing to be aware off is that yes, Pits are dog aggressive dogs, and always will be. So the idiot owners who let there Pits off the leash around strange dogs are causeing problems for the breed. Many Pit experts say never, ever, let your Pits off the leash with strange dogs. And you never leave your pit alone in the house with dogs they know. But, one must be aware that dog agression and human agression are completely different. Pit had dog agression trained into them, but they had the want to please humans bred into them. When dogs are being used to fight the people have to be able to get into the ring safely and get their dog out without being attacked themselves. So any pit that is shy or is aggressive to humans is unusual for the breed. People who have pits need to take extra measures to be sure other people and dogs as well as their dog is safe.

Possibly around 19 in 2010. But remember that it's not the breed's fault, but the people who raise and care for the dog that causes these fatalities that could otherwise be avoided through proper care and leadership.

It's difficult to calculate because many dog bites aren't reported or are incorrectly reported. There is a current hysteria surrounding "pit-bulls" and many dogs involved in attacks are labeled "pit-bulls" when they actually aren't. In the related links below I posted the information.
