You should take (or let it out in your yard) right after they get up, after they eat, after lunch (if they have lunch), after dinner, and right before they go to bed. You should also take them on bigger walks around multiple blocks a couple of times a day. How many times a day do you go while at home? This is how many times they MAY have to go. You go potty....take them out too. But, if you have a normal job and have to leave your dog kenneled or in the house all day, take him out just prior to your leaving for the day and right when you come into the house. Don't wait, hey he's been in all day and you had your chances to go throughout the day, so take him out right away. Take him out in the evening and then again just before settling down for the night.
