Cats have 24 whiskers on average, about 12 whiskers on each side of their nose. Whiskers play a very important part. When a cat is walking through the dark house near 1:00 in the morning, and they find a crevice: behind the couch, between the washer and the dryer...they don't know if they can fit through it or not.

If a cat's head goes through something, the rest of it's body will follow, unless you have a fat cat. (This is not good because it can cause Diabetes.) But sometimes, even if it's a hole in the fence outside, they can measure it with their whiskers. Cats have long whiskers because they need to measure the distances. If their whiskers don't brush each side of the crevice, then they can probably walk right through.

No. Dogs, like horses, cats (and many other felines), etc., use their whiskers as receptors. I disagree with trimming horse whiskers because of this. They are natural, and are used to feel around them subtlely. - Kate
