Most Bitches will reach puberty when they are between 6 and 7 months old. At this time the bitch's vulva will become enlarged, during this time varying amounts of blood stained fluid is passed. This period in time is usually referred to as "Come on heat" or to be "in season". Some Westie females will show signs of abdominal discomfort and can also become excitable more than usual. They may also loose they're appetite for a few days before heat commences. The Westie female will become attractive to the male dog usually from the first day of heat, but are not really interested until 7 to 10 days. At this stage The female Westie will become anxious to escape from your home to meet the male.

A dog will have heat cycles twice a year (on average) for it's entire life. Dogs do not have a menopause, as human women do, and can get pregnant as an elderly dog.

Female dogs should not be bred before her second heat cycle, and should not have a litter every year. It's also not healthy for a dog to get pregnant over six or seven years, without first having the dog examined by a vet.

The easiest thing is to have a female dog spayed. Not only will she gain health benefits from being spayed, but you will never have to worry about unwanted litters, or the male dogs a female in heat attracts. There are many reduced cost spay clinics all over the country, contact your local animal shelter or Humane Association to find one near you.
