It is presently illegal to trade in live animals, skins or body parts ( for example whale"s teeth, Ivory from whales or elephants- unless there is obvious antique value and the substance was secured before the various bans. This is called Pre-Ban Ivory About 50 years ago we had a parlor organ that was probably late nineteenth century, it was made by Mason and Hamlin. the instument had one keyboard and ivory keys. the air-pumps needed replacement. to make a long story short, this was clearly Pre-ban ivory on the keyboard. we donated the instrument to a church music school when we had to move! This was l964.
