How much food do you feed your cat?

My indoor male cat is fed 200g of high quality wet food per day. He is fed a rotation of three brands, with meat contents varying from 70% and above. He is not fed any dry food. He is an "average" 4kg cat, and his weight has been steady his entire adult life.

My indoor female cat, one year old, about 4 pounds in weight, eats 1/2 cup of dry food in the morning, and 1/2 cup dry food mixed with canned food at dinner time. Water is always available, and the water dish is cleaned each day and refilled. A larger framed cat may eat up to 3/4 cup per feeding, depending on the cat and quality of food being fed.

Since she is not spayed, I have been feeding her hairball remedy food (She is long haired domestic). If she was neutered or spayed, she might be at risk of being a little overweight (although unlikely), and I would feed her low calorie or indoor cat remedy.

Although I prefer the less expensive dry food, it is usually high in ash content, and causes internal problems as cats age, so it is worthwhile to purchase brands that are species-appropriate (lots of meat, no grains), which can keep a cat from developing health problems that can cost hundreds of dollars to surgically correct.

Only kittens should have unlimited access to cat (kitten) food, since they are still growing. Kittens should have water, and/or special cat milk, not cow's milk, as it causes diarrhoea.

Often owners just feed their cat as much as the animals want until they see that their cat is getting chubby. That is fine if you have a busy schedule or a family or just plain lazy but if you want it to be a show cat or some loved family cat that you can show off too you would want to give it special care like shown as above.

According to my vet, an adult cat needs only 1/2 cup of dry food per day, not twice a day. It is also true though, that cats eat more in winter (if it's cold/if they go outside), but 1 cup plus some moist food every day for a 4 pound cat is too much. She won't be 4 pounds for long ...
