How old are dogs when they can mate?

My 12 year old dog was still going into heat and had her first litter at that age. She only had 2 pups and neither survived We had no idea she was even pregnant. She was a schnauzer She had to be put down at 13 :( But my opinion is they go into heat till they die)

Dogs NEVER 'quit having puppies', however, males & females do become a bit less fertile with age.

It's the owner's job to prevent the dogs from having puppies to late.

Think about it this way.

The best age to spay a former breeding dog is 6 or 7, for males, you can wait till 9 if he's healthy & fit. Anyway, you should stop letting the dogs breed, or breeding the dogs by 8yrs.
