Saddle's today can either make or break a horse so to speak. If you have a well fitting saddle it improves their back muscles and overall performance. If you have an ill-fitting saddle that is either pinching or resting incorrectly on a portion of the back such as the withers, it will destroy back tissue, cause bone damage (especially to young and old horses) and eventually leave you with a lame horse.
