The infamous locking jaw is a myth, There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of 'locking mechanism' unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier.

The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog.

''Lockjaw'' is described as when a Bull breed Dog supposedly fuses its jaws around an object and cannot be made to let go. However, the theory that Dogs such as Pit Bull Terriers have the ability to ''lock'' their jaws is actually a proven myth. It originated from the fact that all Terriers have extreme tenacity and drive and are therefore unwilling to let go of objects, but they cannot fuse their jaws around the object. Pit Bull skulls have been compared to the skulls of Labradors and Dachshunds and were found to have completely normal jaw formation. It is true that Pit Bulls do have a high drive to hold on, but they cannot ''lock'' their jaws.
