You can be as creative as you want, but there are some rules to follow:

1. Dogs respond best to names with 1 or 2 syllables. If you dog is named Liberty, if may be best to call him 'Libby' for short.

2. Choose a name that is easy to call out. Those with strong consonants such as 'ch', 'sh' and 'ky' sounds are the best.

3. Choose a name that is not too common. It gets confusing when there are two dogs named Max in the park!

4. Don't pick a name that sounds like a command. 'Kit' sounds too much like 'Sit and Noah sounds too much like 'No'.

5. Pick a name that actually suits a dog. Blackie is a good name for a black lab as Amigo for a Chihuahua!

6. Try to call out the name and see if your dog responds. You'll be surprised that some names are more likely to catch his attention.
