How to get the dog smell out of a garage?

Any unpleasant odor usually sticks onto porous substances, like fabric, crude wood or timber and the likes.

First and foremost you must determine the source of the smell. Is it really originating from a dog or could it be something else, like mildew? A 'wet dog' -smell could very well be coming from a infestation of mildew or fungi.

If one is allergic to dogs, removing dog odor is as important and as through as removing mildew from the garage; you must remove all items from the garage and clean every inch of the walls and furniture. Also the items removed from the garage must be cleansed or replaced.

A simple masking of the odor with air fresheners will not do.

But if one is not allergic, then the cleaning need not be as through. Usually removing the porous material where the smell lingers, is enough. And then perhaps a good air freshener.

If the smell is urine, then you have a quite an issue, especially if the urine is on unpainted concrete floor. The unpainted concrete is very porous and thus will suck in the liquid. Removing sucked in urine is nigh impossible.

You can try pouring chlorine - water mixture on the spot and let it suck in, hoping it will neutralize the ammonia. But for my own experience this usually results into smelling both chlorine and ammonia. The only method left is to either tolerate the smell until it has run it's course, or cut out the spot and pour new concrete in it's place.

What we learn from this? Always paint your concrete floors :)
