It is a modern restatement of the the principle from the 14th century, known as Ockham's Razor, which states that "Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily." In other words, the simplest answer is probably the best one. In trying to see all possibilities, by over-complicating an issue, the truth or answer can be obscured.
