Saknis wants Attean to learn to read so he can understand the treaties that they made with the settlers.
Attean is the grandson of Saknis in the childrens fictional book The Sign of the Beaver
Matt gave Saknis the book because he wanted to share knowledge and stories with him, building a connection and fostering understanding between their two cultures. By giving Saknis the book, Matt hoped to bridge the divide and learn from each other.
Attean's grandmother did not want Matt to come to the Indian feast but Saknis said to Matt that he was allowed to come.
Saknis wants Attean to be able to read the treaties and so he won't give up land if he signs treaties. To be more clear, white men (no offense) have been evilly tricking the Indians by making them sign a contract. A contract in which agreeing for the Indians to give their land to the white men. Saknis' tribe doesn't know how to read the English language, so they sign the contract not even knowing what they've done. This is where Matt comes in, teaching Attean how to read so they won't be tricked anymore.
