It depends what you want the dog for but i would suggest a Labrador as they are very friendly and an said to be an amazing fist dog. If you would like a German Shepard I would tell you to go for it but read about them first.

Not necessarily the best, I would say that as long as it looks scary and has a mean sounding bark and is very stong people wont be attacking your house.

As a veterinarian I'll take a shot: No. Unfortunately many shepherd dogs are surprisingly fearful- thus puts kids at the risk of bite from a 'fear bitter' situation. For the most part, I do not think that "family" and "guard dog" belong in the same sentence, unless the dog undergoes extensive training. If you want to pursue this, I would lean towards a Dobermen Pincher instead. However, a large "family dog" such a lab, golden etc will still have enough of a bark to offer a warning, and be a much safer choice around the kids.
