Any dog can have a stroke. From common knowledge (not scientific) we see many small breeds with strokes because they live longer than large breeds ... and therefore experience old-age maladies.

Scientifically, the boxer breed has been known to have strokes because they are prone to brain tumors.

Yes, dogs can get strokes, but they are generally for different reasons than humans have strokes. In humans, strokes are generally caused by weakness or rigidity of the blood vessels, typically secondary to cardiovascular disease such as athlerosclerosis (hardening of the arteries through cholesterol deposits) or high blood pressure. In dogs, strokes tend to be caused by emboli (traveling pieces of something in the blood stream) such as a piece of cartilage from a ruptured spinal disk.

This is a fairly uncommon condition in dogs.

Many dogs have survived strokes. I had a dog that had a stroke when he was almost 13 years old, and he survived. But I took him to the vet immediately when I realized what was happening. He was treated and recovered from it, but had a partial paralysis on one side for a couple of months afterwards.

The main thing is to get the dog to the vet ASAP, and keep it as calm and comfortable as possible until you get to the vet's.
