All parts of the Mistletoe plant (stem, leaves and berries) contain toxins, if eaten mistletoe can cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

California Poison Control states that a small child or pet swallowing one to two berries or leaves will most likely NOT result in serious harm, but for safety sake, this holiday plant should be kept out of the reach of children and animals.

Before hanging, place mistletoe in a plastic baggie or netting to prevent berries or leaves from dropping to the ground - where it could be eaten by children or pets.

Signs of mistletoe poisoning - Gastrointestinal disorders (vomiting, diarrhea, cramps and pain); cardiovascular collapse (low blood pressure, shock, seizure); dyspnea (shortness of breath); bradycardia (slow, irregular heart rate).

If you believe your pet has eaten mistletoe, call your local veterinarian or ASPCA for advise.
