This just really depends on your dog and her personality. All of our dogs nest before hand, except for one. She tends to nest after her pups are whelped. She is still a wonderful mother, she just chooses to do things differently. As a matter of fact, she tends to walk to her own beat no matter what the "books" tell you to expect on anything. It is just her personality.

Before whelping, a dog's body undergoes several changes, including a drop in body temperature. Typically, a dog's temperature will decrease to around 98°F (37°C) or lower, about 24 hours before labor begins. Additionally, the dog's appetite may decrease, and she may exhibit nesting behavior as she prepares for the arrival of her puppies. These signs indicate that whelping is imminent.

The Nesting was created in 1981.
Nesting occurs when the jewellery is sinking into the lip or any other piercing for that matter. It's generally due to improper jewellery selection, uncontrolled swelling of the piercing due to poor aftercare. The resolution is to get properly sized jewellery in the piercing before the nesting becomes an abscess due to the piercings ability to discharge normal healing material and matter.
When a dog gives birth, it is called whelping.
