The colour "paint" for horses is both a colouration, just like pinto is recognized as a colour pattern under a colour registry, and a breed. Paints are also known as a breed under various registries, more close to home being the American Paint Horse breed registry which has horses with western stock breeding combined with the usual colour pattern of white on dark coat colours. Paints are predominantly registered if they have American Paint Horse, Quarterhorse and/or Thoroughbred breeding (not much of anything else) parents.

What two horses make a gray paint?

Color is decided by genetics and nothing else. To get a grey paint you must breed at least one grey paint to another paint horse. Grey tends to be a dominant color and may override another color.
