It depends. Where on the dog are you thinking of using a marker and for what purpose? Typically I don't recommend using a permanent marker, but water colour markers work nicely on white and light fur. On darker coats try using coloured sidewalk chalk. As a groomer I have used both for special occassions and they can lend a really cute and fun look to an otherwise ordinary trim.
