That depends on the individual species and the individual environment. Some are designed to control animal population, some are designed to control vegetation. Still others are designed to control both. These classifications are:
Carnivores:
Responsible for control of animal population by reducing other ever-growing species such as insects, and other unwanted rodents.
Herbivores:
Responsible for control of the vegetation and surrounding flora and/or fauna such as the wildly growing vine known as "Kudzu" to reduce the chances of overgrowth.
Omnivores:
Responsible for control of both vegetation and animal population.
Scavengers:
Responsible for removing the leftover waste generated by others.
I could go into detail, but, this about sums everything up.
The role of a living thing in its habitat is known as the niche. This is mainly to facilitate interaction with other living things which forms the ecosystem.

A habitat gives living organisms shelter to live. That's what a habitat do.
The environment that surrounds a living thing, including air, water, soil, and other living organisms, is known as its habitat. A habitat provides the resources and conditions necessary for the survival and reproduction of the organism. Changes in the habitat can impact the health and well-being of the living thing.
