That is Possible, Pelerous Jack was the Dolphin that Guided ships over the NZ cook straight for many decades until he mysteriously disappeared in April 1912, it is believed he died from natural causes however he may have gone to the Menai Straights which may have taken 8 years (hence him arriving in 1920).
Pelorous Jack was a famous Risso's Dolphin, 4 m long, which escorted ships through Cook Strait, New Zealand between 1888 and 1912.
