Our German Shepherd Chow Chow mix dog Schmow lived 13 years and for the most part she was very healthy. She was actually the sweetest dog I've ever owned. She was absolutely so gentle; it was insane. People say these dogs are aggressive but she was amazingly gentle with our smaller dog. She could rip him to shreds but she let him just play with her pulling on her ears and jumping on her while she'd gently place a paw on his back to act like she was fighting back. It was adorable. Back to your question though... As she got older she developed Arthritis in her legs and getting up and sitting down became very laborious for her. The final event was horrible. She was laying in the backyard and my mom noticed she hadn't moved for a while. My mom went to see how she was and noticed maggots had grown on her fur. She took her to the vet who confirmed that she had lost the use of her legs and that it would keep happening because she could no longer move the flies away from her fur. It would be horribly painful to be eaten alive by bugs so they put her to sleep. The vet also said that the flies lay their eggs and it only takes a small time for them to become maggots. So sad. We miss her so much.
