A barrow is a gelded (neutered) male pig.

Because a pig's scrotum doesn't hang separately from the body, like a human's, a calf's or a goat's, they cannot be castrated by banding. Castration requires a cut to be made in the rear end of the pig and the connections between the testicles and the penis are severed. However, this minor surgery is often done to young pigs with no anaesthetic, and most recover quickly.
