What animal uses disguise to protect itself?

silver back snake ( disguises itself as dead , emitting smells to fool the hunter into believing its been dead for days , so it may move on.

that stick bug from bugs life, im not sure what its called but i know its a real insect and it poses as a twig to avoid danger.

There is no reptile that does this, its a common misunderstanding that chameleons do this. Chameleons change color very rapidly, but they do it depending on mood. It is a form of visual communication between chameleons and possible predators.

There are animals that will change into their surrounding, but they are not common. Some flatfish and octopuses do this, BUT its important to understand that they are limited in their abilities. They can basically never choose depending on the background or surrounding, their ability is a result of their evolutionary history. A flatfish will have evolved un sand and will only change its color to look like that sand. Put it in a purple tank and it will do the same, turn sand-colored. There have never been a selective preassure on them to be able to turn to any thing other than sand-color, so that's all they "know".
