Mylanocytes, more commonly referred to as melanocytes, are specialized cells located primarily in the skin, hair follicles, and the inner ear. They are responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes, and plays a crucial role in protecting against UV radiation. Melanocytes arise from neural crest cells during embryonic development and are essential for determining an individual's skin tone and protecting against sun damage. Abnormalities in melanocyte function can lead to skin disorders, including vitiligo and melanoma.
