The majority of the time a mustang spend sleeping is very light sleep they obtain by locking their knees so that they can sleep while standing up. They only sleep when a "sentry" is on guard, looking for any sign that a predator may be near. On occasion, a horse wll walk into the middle of the herd and lay totally down for some deep REM sleep. 5 minutes of this is about all they need a day. The rest are just short little cat naps standing up.
