Blood poisoning in a horse is where an infection gets into the blood stream. In horses, this can be fatal within 24 hours, sometimes less depending upon the specific bacteria involved in the infection.

Common signs include very high fever (105 degrees F or higher), breaking out in hives or a drenching sweat, difficulty standing or walking, loss of appetite, loss of thirst, dark urine, collapse and death.
