I wouldn't recommend pedigree as our pedigree dog has loads of health troubles and i know some other people as well who have had troubles. Mongrels are just as cute, and generally don't have as many problems!

Some breeds are more expensive than others to maintain, so consider the expenses you can afford. My favorite dogs are mixed breeds because they're often hardier and more interesting. Before spending a lot of money on a specific breed, visit an animal shelter and see what is available there and ask the shelter staff about breeds suitable for your environment.
