The American Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes 47 rabbit breeds and 13 different breeds of cavies. Within these breeds are different types of varieties that shows much diversity in the rabbit breeder industry.

The most common breeds used for meat include:

- New Zealand

- Californian

- Rex

Most other commercial type breeds were originally created for the purpose of meat or fur production, but are not commonly used today. To name just a few:

- American

- Silver Marten

- Silver

- Hotots

American, American Fuzzy Lop, American Sable, Angora (the types are English Angora, French Angora, Giant Angora, & Satin Angora), Belgian Hare (which only resembles a hare, not really a hare), Beveren, Britannia Petite, Californian, Champagne d' Argent, Checkered Giant, Chinchilla (which are not actually Chinchillas, just resembles them; the types are Standard Chinchilla, American Chinchilla, & Giant Chinchilla), Cinnamon, Creme d' Argent, Dutch, Dwarf Hotot, English Spot, Flemish Giant, Florida White, Harlequin (the types are Japanese Harlequin & Magpie Harlequin), Havana, Himalayan, Hotot, Jersey Wooly, Lilac, Lop (the types are English Lop, French Lop, Holland Lop, & Mini Lop), Mini Rex, Mini Satin, Netherland Dwarf, New Zealand (which was actually developed in the US despite its name), Palomino, Polish, Rex, Rhinelander, Satin, Silver, Silver Fox (which are not foxes), Silver Marten, Tan, and, finally, Thrianta.

A lot of them are named for their colors. But remember that these are the breeds only recognized by the ARBA.
