Apparently, there is only one Akita Inu that is widely known throughout the world.

His name was Hachiko (ハチ公 in Japanese), an Akita of the Japanese variety that lived in Japan from 1923 -1935. Hachiko was recognized as one of the most loyal dogs in history, waiting nine years for the return of his owner.

Hachiko was owned by Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor at the University of Tokyo, and Hachiko used to go to the Shibuya Station to greet his owner when he returned from work. Sadly, Hidesaburo Ueno died from cerebral hemorrhage. Even though Hidesaburo Ueno never returned, Hachiko spent the next nine years waiting for him at the train station until his own death.

The movie Hachi: A Dog's Tale, was based on him although some parts of the plot are different from reality.

Another less known Akita Inu was Gin, an Akita that appeared in the adventure manga Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin.
